Are Medical Alert Systems Covered By Medicare?

Medical alert systems can give people an important sense of security, especially if they live alone or are in a fragile state of health. Typically, you pay for the device itself along with a subscription service to keep the medical response service active. The costs over time can add up. But does Medicare cover these devices?

Unfortunately, no. Medicare does not cover medical alert systems. However, you may be able to find other coverage to reduce the costs of these devices and give you that added sense of safety in your own home.

Why Are They Not Covered?

Medicare will not cover medical alert systems because the devices do not fit the definition of durable medical equipment, which are covered under Medicare Part B. These are equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, oxygen equipment, infusion pumps, CPAP devices, and more. The federal government decides what devices qualify for this coverage. Medical alert systems, on the other hand, are not considered medically necessary.

How to Get Coverage for Medical Alert Systems

Once you are enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Part B, you can sign up for a Medicare Advantage plan if you live within the plan’s coverage area. These plans give you the same services covered under Original Medicare Part A and Part B, but your claims and coverage go through a private company that has been approved by Medicare. In addition to providing standard coverage, Medicare Advantage plans often offer additional benefits to make their packages appeal to Medicare beneficiaries.

You may find a Medicare Advantage plan that covers medical alert systems. These may also be referred to as personal emergency response systems. Check with the plan to see if it offers this benefit before signing up.

Medicaid, which provides coverage for people with limited income and resources, may give you a coverage waiver for a medical alert system if you meet certain requirements. These benefits may be available to you if you receive home health care instead of care through an institution. Coverage will vary by state.

Other Ways to Save on Medical Alert Systems

If you have a Health Savings Account, you may be able to pay for a medical alert system and its subscription through your HSA. Any expenses paid with your HSA must be qualifying medical expenses, and if your medical alert system has a medical information plan, it may qualify.

If you have long-term care insurance, you receive payments for home health care and nursing home costs. These plans can cover a medical alert system as part of your health measures.

You may also be eligible for reduced costs and savings if you belong to a Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) or if you are a Veteran.
