PPO Plans

There are several types of Medicare Advantage plans available currently. Each one offers different advantages and disadvantages. Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans are a popular plan category that millions of Americans currently use. It is one of the more flexible options, although it is known to come at a higher cost.  If you are comparing Medicare Advantage plan types, here is what you need to know about PPO plans.

This type of Advantage plan has a network of doctors, specialists, hospitals, and other health care providers that you can choose to get care from. If you see providers that are within this network, your out-of-pocket costs will be minimal. You don’t have to see providers within this network, though. If you choose to seek care outside of the plan’s network, you will still be covered, but not fully. This means seeing out-of-network providers will cost more than seeing providers who are in your plan’s network.

With PPO plans, you are always covered for emergency and urgent care, as long as the services you receive are medically necessary. You can also have prescription drugs covered through most PPO plans. Make sure you choose a plan that covers prescription drugs if you need that benefit because you won’t be able to join a separate Medicare drug plan after joining Medicare Advantage PPO.
