Will Medicare Cover Telehealth?

Medicare Part B, which provides medical insurance, covers office visits with your primary doctor and some other care providers. This includes e-visits, telehealth, and virtual check-ins.

What Are E-Visits?

If you’re not familiar, an e-visit is a virtual consultation with your doctor. Thanks to advanced audio and video technology available, you can see and speak with your doctor from the comfort and convenience of your own home.

Since the coronavirus pandemic, e-visits have become the safest and most common way to get medical care for many. Due to rising popularity, e-visits are here to stay. This is welcome news for those who may have limited mobility or cannot drive. There are many reasons one might opt for an e-visit over an in-person consultation. Some physicians may even require it.

Some types of physicians who offer e-visits include doctors, nurse practitioners, physician’s assistants, psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and speech pathologists. Some of these practitioners will only offer e-visits under specific circumstances.

Keep in mind that you will need internet access and the web address for your physician’s hosting site. You will get this information from your doctor’s office when setting up your appointment. You won’t be able to access your e-visit without making proper arrangements beforehand.

What Does Medicare Cover?

As with any other medical service, the Medicare Part B rules apply. You will be financially responsible for your deductible, but once that is met, you will only pay 20% of the remaining amount approved by Medicare.
