Which Medicare Part Is Best for Me?

Medicare is a public health insurance program offered by the federal government. The program is divided into four parts, each supporting different health care benefits. If you aren’t sure which Medicare part is best for you, here’s what you need to know.

What Are Medicare’s Parts?

There are four parts of Medicare: Part A, Part B, Part C, and Part D. This is what each part offers to Medicare beneficiaries.

Part A

Medicare Part A is the hospital insurance component of the Medicare program. This part provides Medicare beneficiaries with coverage that helps pay for hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, home health care, and similar health care expenses. There is no Part A premium for some Medicare enrollees, meaning benefits are provided at no cost. Though, there are costs that must be paid to use your benefits, including deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments.

Part B

Medicare Part B is medical insurance. This part provides Medicare beneficiaries with coverage that helps pay for medically necessary services and preventive health services. You can get help paying for ambulance services, mental health care, clinical research, and durable medical equipment through Part B. Part B is not available premium-free, meaning premiums, coinsurance, deductibles, and copayments must be paid out-of-pocket.

Part C

Medicare Part C, also known as Medicare Advantage, is the private health insurance component of the Medicare program. These plans must offer the same minimum benefits that Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) offer. Though, there are additional benefits featured in many Medicare Advantage plans.

Part D

Part D covers prescription drugs. The plans must cover certain drugs, meaning plan members can usually receive their desired medications at a lower cost.

Which Medicare Part Should You Get?

Original Medicare consists of Part A and Part B coverage. For some Medicare beneficiaries, Original Medicare is all of the coverage needed. Many Original Medicare enrollees will also choose to purchase a Part D plan to ensure they have the necessary prescription drug coverage.

Suppose you want Original Medicare coverage, prescription drug coverage, and more benefits than you initially get with just Original Medicare. In that case, a Part C plan might be for you.
