Does Medicare Cover Walkers And Wheelchairs?

If you have an injury that limits your mobility, your doctor may have prescribed you durable medical equipment, such as a wheelchair or walker. Fortunately, Medicare does cover these purchases. If you are a Medicare participant, you can get help purchasing walkers, wheelchairs, and other durable medical equipment.

Medicare Part B

Through Part B of Medicare, beneficiaries receive medical coverage that can be used to pay for preventive health services and medically necessary services. This component of Medicare also covers durable medical equipment. As long as you pay your premiums and any related out-of-pocket costs, Medicare will cover most of the expenses related to these purchases.

How To Get Durable Medical Equipment

To get durable medical equipment, you must have a doctor treating your condition who submits a written order stating that you have the medical need for a wheelchair or other piece of durable medical equipment. Part B covers wheelchairs and scooters for anyone who has limited mobility and meets all of the following conditions:

  • You have a health condition that limits your mobility in a way that prevents you from moving around your home.
  • You’re unable to complete normal activities of daily living without assistance.
  • You can operate a wheelchair or scooter safely or have someone available to help you.
  • Your doctor is enrolled with Medicare.
  • You can use the equipment in your home.

How Much Does a Wheelchair Cost You?

After you pay your Part B deductible for the year, Medicare will pay 80% of the cost of durable medical equipment. If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, this amount may be different. Contact your plan provider to learn exactly much you will need to pay for wheelchairs or scooters.
