Does Medicare Cover Dentures For Seniors?

If you’ve experienced dental health problems and need dentures, you may be looking for ways to get help paying for them. Fortunately, some Medicare beneficiaries have access to coverage that pays for dentures. To find out how to get dentures through Medicare, keep reading.

What Are Dentures?

Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth and gum tissue. There are two types of dentures available; complete and partial. Partial dentures only replace some missing teeth, while complete dentures are designed to fill the entire mouth.

Original Medicare Doesn’t Cover Dentures

Original Medicare is the primary health care plan offered by the Medicare program. Through it, you receive Part A hospital insurance and Part B medical insurance. You can also purchase additional prescription drug coverage through Part D.

Unfortunately, members of Original Medicare do not receive dental insurance through their coverage. This means they won’t get help from Medicare to pay for dentures. If you are a member of Original Medicare, it may be appropriate to purchase a dental insurance plan from a private insurance carrier.

Medicare Advantage May Cover Dentures

The alternative to Original Medicare is Medicare Advantage. With a Medicare Advantage plan, you have access to extra benefits that aren’t available through Original Medicare. In some cases, dental insurance may be included.

If you have dental insurance through your Medicare Advantage plan, check with them to see if dentures are covered. Usually, Medicare Advantage plans will cover both types of dentures to some extent. Although, plans typically have a yearly limit of $1,000 to $2,000.

The Cost Of Medicare Advantage

If you want to switch to Medicare Advantage or enroll for the first time, you may be concerned about the cost of coverage. The average premium for Medicare Advantage plans is around $19 per month. Plans may also require co-pays for doctor visits and services.
