Can I Disenroll From Medicare Advantage?

Having the best Medicare coverage possible is crucial in determining if you have the right amount of coverage and you have enough costs covered. Because of this, there may be a few reasons why you feel you need to switch plans or disenroll from a plan, such as Medicare Advantage

Should You Disenroll?

If you have moved, if the plan you had is no longer participating in Medicare, or if your existing plan is no longer meeting your needs, you may want to switch or go back to Original Medicare. If you need different services covered, want to change prescription plans, or be seen by a different provider, it might be time to change plans.

To disenroll from your Medicare Advantage Plan, you will need to enroll in a different policy. If you are simply interested in switching to a different Medicare Advantage plan, you can take advantage of the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period, which starts on January 1 and ends on March 31 every year.

However, suppose you want to switch back to Original Medicare and possibly even enroll yourself in a Part D prescription drug plan. In that case, you can do so during the Annual Enrollment Period. This period starts on October 15 and ends on December 7 each year. Any change you make during this period will become effective on January 1.

What Happens If I Disenroll?

You will automatically be unenrolled in your previous plan when you enroll in a different Medicare Advantage Plan. If you switch back to Original Medicare, you will also be unenrolled from your Medicare Advantage Plan.

Because Medicare Advantage Plans offer more benefits than Original Medicare, they are often more costly. If you are considering leaving Medicare Advantage or resuming Original Medicare, you will want to carefully review your healthcare needs.
